2016 kicked off with rising waters in the Mississippi River in January. As in 2011, the Bonnet Carre Spillway, located in the southwestern corner of Lake Pontchartrain, was opened on January 10th, to relieve pressure on the levees. Engineers sought to limit the river flow at New Orleans to no more than 1.25 million cubic feet per second (cfs). This gallery of images will catalog the macro-scale movement of this sediment-laden water. More images can be found in the recent images in the Image of the Week collection.
