The Mississippi River saw severe flooding in the spring and summer of 2011. River diversions were utilized to relieve the levee system and protect populated areas along the river. The Bonnet Carre diversion located in the southwestern corner of Lake Pontchartrain and the Morganza Spillway located northwest of Baton Rouge were opened in early May, sending sediment-rich freshwater into Lake Pontchartrain and the Atchafalaya Basin. These imagery catalog the macro-scale movement of this water from early April to August of 2011.
