Loop Current eddy merger exposed by satellites during Gulf of Mexico oil spill

In this paper we provide results from an integration of satellite imagery with in-situ data that revealed a large-scale eddy-merging event along the Loop Current’s northern front that reversed oil motion and highlighted limitations in predicting circulation in the Gulf.
